A Ukrainian Defence Intelligence (HUR) operative successfully evacuated a damaged armoured vehicle under enemy fire, providing a vivid glimpse into the gritty reality of the ongoing war with Russia.
During a combat operation in the Kupiansk area of eastern Ukraine, fighters from Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence “Timur” special unit came under attack by Russian forces. Their armoured vehicle, a US-built M1224 MaxxPro, was hit and left in the danger zone.
The armoured vehicle had shielded the soldiers during the attack, allowing them to dismount safely and continue the manoeuvre on foot. Despite the severe damage, a logistics officer from the unit refused to leave the vehicle behind.
Upon reaching the site, the soldier assessed that the engine was still working. In a daring move, he decided to recover the MaxxPro. Despite missing a tyre and grinding its metal undercarriage against the road, he managed to drive the battered vehicle to safety, producing a stream of sparks along the way.
Aerial reconnaissance units captured the dramatic moment on video. The footage highlights the resilience and resourcefulness of Ukraine’s armed forces, showcasing the daily risks taken by its defenders and the ingenuity that keeps them fighting against a larger invading force.
The MaxxPro, supplied through Western support, including significant contributions from the United States, is valued at around $500,000, or approximately £393,000.
