Ukrainian air defence units operating the US made MIM-23 Hawk missile system have successfully intercepted and destroyed four Russian cruise missiles during a major enemy missile and aviation attack targeting critical infrastructure. The air strike occurred within the operational zone of Ukraine’s Air Command West, and thanks to the effectiveness of the Hawk system, no enemy missiles breached the defence.
The MIM-23 Hawk, an American medium range surface to air missile system, has proven its worth despite its age. Ukrainian forces say the system is both reliable and easy to use. According to Viktor, the commander of the unit responsible for the launches, his battery executed four launches, each one resulting in a direct hit. Three of those missiles were taken down by one launcher, with kill marks proudly painted onto the system’s exterior. A second launcher at a different position scored a further direct hit, bringing the tally to four.
The missiles were launched during an intense combined missile and air strike by Russian forces, believed to have been ordered by the Russian dictator. Ukrainian crews were able to respond with precision and professionalism, preventing serious damage and saving lives in the process.
Viktor noted that all his troops had received thorough training abroad. Foreign instructors provided accessible and practical education, allowing the unit to operate the system at a high level of competence. He said the confidence among the unit is strong and the ability to intercept future threats continues to improve with each mission.
The destruction of incoming Russian cruise missiles not only protects infrastructure but also boosts morale among Ukraine’s defenders. As Viktor remarked, there is great satisfaction in stopping the enemy from harming civilians and essential facilities. He believes that if there had been more missiles, they would have taken them down too.
With continued training, improved skills and a reliable air defence platform, Ukrainian air defenders say they are ready to neutralise any further missile threats from the Kremlin’s forces.
