The U.S. is destroying the world order as Washington makes overtures to the Kremlin, said Valerii Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine’s former commander-in-chief and current ambassador to the U.K., on March 6.
Speaking at Chatham House, Zaluzhnyi stated that President Donald Trump’s administration had questioned the unity of “the whole Western world.”
“Now Washington is trying to delegate security issues to Europe without the participation of the U.S., which means that in the near future, NATO could cease to exist,” the ambassador said.
According to Zaluzhnyi, Europe could become Russia’s next target. He argued that the fears of Western partners have enabled Moscow to begin forming an “axis” with key allies.
These allies, Russia’s two main partners—Iran and North Korea—supply weapons to Moscow that are being used against Ukraine. Pyongyang has also sent over 10,000 troops to fight alongside Russian forces in the embattled Kursk Oblast.
“We see that it’s not just the axis of evil and Russia trying to revise the world order, but the U.S. is also playing a role in destroying this order,” Zaluzhnyi said. “When these countries of the axis reach a strategic agreement among themselves, we should consider whether this is an attempt to revise the existing world order.”
The remarks come amid rising tensions between Kyiv and Washington following a heated exchange in the Oval Office on February 28 between President Volodymyr Zelensky and Trump.
The dispute resulted in the collapse of a bilateral deal regarding Ukraine’s natural resources, after which the U.S. president paused all military aid and intelligence sharing with Ukraine.
This move to suspend aid to Ukraine is part of a series of Kremlin-friendly steps taken by the U.S. The Trump administration has also been considering lifting sanctions imposed on Russia for its brutal war against Ukraine, which has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands.
