United States President Donald Trump has claimed that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin would have taken control of all of Ukraine had Trump not won the 2024 presidential election. Speaking during an interview with ABC News, Trump asserted that the war in Ukraine only began because President Joe Biden was in office.

Trump said, “I think Putin wanted all of Ukraine. I think if I had not won the election, he would have gotten all of Ukraine.” The comments were met with disbelief across much of the international community, given the complex realities of the war launched by Russia in 2022.

Trump further suggested that the Russian dictator is possibly open to ending the war. “That is possible. He could listen to me. I would say he would like to stop the war. I believe that thanks to me, he is ready to stop fighting,” Trump told ABC, without offering evidence.

These remarks followed Trump’s campaign rally in Michigan, where he praised what he described as the success of his first 100 days in office, calling it a “revolution of common sense.” In another eyebrow-raising comment, Trump expressed interest in becoming the next Pope.

While the human toll of the Russian invasion continues to rise in Ukraine, Trump’s focus on self-congratulation rather than concrete support for Ukrainian sovereignty has once again raised concern among European allies. Trump’s admiration for authoritarian figures and failure to clearly condemn Russian aggression has drawn sharp criticism from both Democratic and Republican circles in Washington and abroad.

The notion that the fate of Ukraine rests solely on Trump’s presence in office is not only factually inaccurate but also dismissive of the ongoing resistance, sacrifice and leadership shown by Ukrainians and their armed forces.

Trump’s self-praise and revisionist narrative appears more focused on boosting his image than supporting Ukraine’s cause or recognising the brutal impact of Russia’s full scale invasion as Ukraine continues to defend its independence and territory against Russian occupation.
