The Russian army has surpassed a critical psychological milestone in its war losses, with nearly one million personnel confirmed eliminated since the start of its full invasion of Ukraine. According to figures released by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on 28 April, a further 1,060 Russian troops were neutralised in the previous 24 hours alone.
This brings the total number of Russian military personnel killed in Ukraine since 24 February 2022 to approximately 950,860. These staggering losses reflect the sustained and intense resistance by Ukrainian forces, who continue to repel Russian aggression across multiple fronts.
In addition to personnel losses, Russia lost 42 artillery systems, 5 tanks, 14 combat armoured vehicles, 94 tactical level drones, and 140 vehicles and fuel tankers in just one day. The updated figures also show a cumulative loss of 10,728 tanks, 22,325 armoured vehicles, and 27,080 artillery systems by the Russian military.
Since the beginning of 2025 alone, Ukraine’s Defence Forces have reportedly eliminated over 155,000 Russian soldiers. Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reiterated that Russia will face consequences for each crime committed against Ukraine and its people.
Despite Russia’s massive losses, the Kremlin continues its campaign of destruction with relentless attacks on Ukrainian civilians and infrastructure. Ukraine’s military resilience and growing domestic arms production are helping to turn the tide, but continued international support remains crucial.

While Russia faces this colossal human and equipment toll, its state budget and war economy are under increasing pressure. With oil prices falling and the ruble weakened, sustaining military operations has become more difficult. The near-million personnel loss also threatens internal stability within Russia and raises serious doubts about its long-term capability to maintain an occupation.
