The Ukrainian Defense Forces are continuing their operation in the Kursk region of the Russian Federation, despite claims from the Kremlin that Russian forces have “liberated” the area. This was confirmed by Andriy Kovalenko, the head of the Centre for Counteracting Disinformation at the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, in a statement reported by the Ukrainian news outlet UNN.
Kovalenko strongly refuted the Kremlin’s claims, asserting that Ukrainian forces are still actively engaged in operations in the region. He stated that Ukrainian soldiers are effectively thwarting enemy attempts to seize territory in the Kursk region, underlining that there is no threat of Ukrainian forces being encircled by Russian units. He also noted that the operation in the region is ongoing and that the Ukrainian Defense Forces are pushing back against Russian aggression.
At the same time, Russian media outlets had reported that the head of Russia’s General Staff had briefed President Vladimir Putin, claiming that Russian forces had “completed the liberation” of the Kursk region from Ukrainian forces. However, Ukrainian military officials quickly countered these claims, with the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stating that there is no truth to these allegations and that the Defence Forces’ operations continue uninterrupted.
Kovalenko also added that Ukrainian forces have been successfully repelling Russian assaults in the Sumy region, located near the border, where enemy advances have been halted.
