A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated by the wife of an investor to help cover the escalating legal fees of former President Donald Trump, following a recent verdict in a New York fraud case. The campaign aims to raise $355 million, mirroring the amount ordered by Judge Arthur Engoron as penalties in a civil fraud case against Trump. Since its launch, the GoFundMe has garnered over $185,000 in donations from approximately 4,000 individuals.
According to the New York attorney general’s office, with accruing interest, Trump and his business could potentially owe more than $450 million. The fundraiser was initiated by Elena Cardone, spouse of investor Grant Cardone, who described her support for Trump as unwavering despite what she perceives as unjust treatment by certain judicial entities in New York.
In her statement on the GoFundMe page, Cardone expressed solidarity with Trump, characterizing the legal challenges he faces as not just personal attacks but also affronts to the principles of fairness and due process that every American deserves. This initiative comes in the wake of Trump being ordered to pay $83.3 million in damages after a judge found him guilty of defaming writer E. Jean Carroll. Previously, Trump was directed to pay Carroll $5 million in a separate ruling last year.
Trump’s legal team has strongly criticized the recent verdict, labeling it as a politically motivated witch hunt. They have indicated their intention to appeal the ruling, emphasizing their belief that the former president has been unfairly targeted by the legal system.
