(Dallas) – A Southwest Airlines plane was struck by gunfire while taxiing on the tarmac at Dallas Love Field Airport, but no passengers were injured, according to the airline.
A Southwest spokesperson confirmed that bullets pierced the fuselage beneath the cockpit as the aircraft, which was carrying passengers, was preparing for takeoff. The airline stated that the bullet struck the right side of the plane under the flight deck.
Following the incident, the plane was returned to the gate where passengers were safely deplaned. The runway was temporarily closed as local authorities investigated the situation.
Both local police and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed the event but have not provided specific details regarding the source of the gunfire.
This incident comes just days after two U.S. planes were struck by gunfire in Haiti, prompting the FAA to issue a 30 day ban on flights to the country.
