President Donald Trump made bold statements regarding U.S. territorial claims and historical changes. Among his proposals were plans to regain control of the Panama Canal, rename the Gulf of Mexico, and restore the name of Mount McKinley.
Trump, addressing the crowd, expressed his belief that China currently holds influence over the Panama Canal, a key waterway connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. “China runs the Panama Canal—and we didn’t give it to China; we gave it to Panama,” Trump remarked, emphasizing that the canal’s management had not been handed over to a foreign power but rather to the nation of Panama. He went on to assert that the U.S. would “take it back.”
In addition to the canal’s future, Trump outlined plans for other significant changes. He voiced his intention to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, a move meant to reinforce American identity and heritage in the region. The new president also took aim at another decision made during the previous administration, referring to the renaming of Mount McKinley. Trump announced his decision to revert the mountain’s name back to its original designation, removing the title “Denali,” which had been established under President Barack Obama.
