Better World, an international Non-Governmental Organization operating in Obongi District, has terminated the contract with FOM and SONS Limited due to their failure to complete a latrine project worth over 30 million shillings on time.
Daeseon Ko, the Country Director of Better World, confirmed to the media on Monday morning that the organization terminated the contract for the construction of a one block of five stance-lined VIP latrine for girls at Holy Trinity Primary School in Pasu village, Palorinya Sub-county, Obongi District.
A termination letter addressed to the office of the RDC Obongi, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, dated October 18, 2023, was issued by the Country Director, Mr. Daeseon Ko, citing the termination of the contract with FOM and SONS Ltd due to their failure to complete the project within the specified time frame.
FOM and SONS Ltd entered a contract of 30,091,770/= on May 16, 2023. However, to the disappointment of the Country Director, FOM and SONS Limited did not finish the latrine construction as agreed upon.
The construction was meant to be completed by September 30, 2023, but due to negligence, FOM and SONS Ltd failed to meet the deadline. The contract was then extended until October 16, 2023, but once again, they failed to complete the project, despite receiving over 21 million shillings, which exceeds the amount they were supposed to receive.
Better World has demanded that FOM and SONS Ltd refund 3,783,140/=, which is the excess money paid to them according to the bill of quantities (BOQ).
Mr. Daeson Ko, the Country Director of Better World, expressed gratitude to the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Obongi, Mr. Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, for his involvement in the groundbreaking ceremony and continuous supervision of the project. He urged the RDC, with his authority, to intervene and ensure FOM and SONS Ltd are blacklisted.
In response, RDC Obongi, Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, confirmed the issue while speaking to our reporter on Monday morning. He commended Better World for their decision and advised the Obongi District local government to follow suit in terminating contracts with those who fail to complete projects on time and deliver substandard work.
The recent allegations of shoddy work and suspected embezzlement against some officials of Obongi District local government further underscore the necessity of holding contractors accountable for their work in the region.
