Ntungamo, Uganda – Police in Ntungamo District have confirmed a fatal accident that occurred on Sunday, December 3rd, 2023, at approximately 1:20 PM. The accident involved two vehicles, a Subaru Forester with registration number UBN 375Q and a Toyota Hiace with registration number UBP314A, at Kahunga trading center along the Ntungamo-Mbarara road.
The Rwizi region Police spokesman has identified the victims as follows:
- Manirakiza Moses, 29, a Mufumbira by tribe, an engineer, and resident of Burungu village, Muramba sub-county, Kisoro district. He was the driver of the Subaru Forester.
- Twesigye Kenneth, 31, an engineer with the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC), a resident of Rwikiniro village, Ruhaama sub-county, Ntungamo district. He was a passenger in the Subaru Forester.
- Mujurizi Herbert, also known as Rough, a Munyankole resident of Rukungiri district and driver of the taxi UBP314A.
Thirteen passengers in the taxi UBP314A sustained injuries and are admitted to Itojo Hospital.
According to Police spokesperson Kasasira, the driver of the Subaru Forester was traveling from Mbarara to Ntungamo when the accident occurred. It was raining heavily at the time, and the driver lost control of the vehicle when it encountered water covering the road. The vehicle swerved into the oncoming lane, colliding head-on with the Toyota Hiace.
Kasasira further stated that the bodies of the deceased have been conveyed to Itojo Hospital mortuary pending postmortem. Both vehicles have been towed and are parked at Ntungamo Police Station pending inspection.
The tragic accident has left many in the community mourning the loss of their loved ones. Eng. Twesigye was recently engaged to his fiancé, Prize Patience, and they were set to marry on Saturday, December 9th, 2023.
