Security Guard Shoots and Kills Suspect in Kisoro District

Kisoro, Uganda – Police in Kisoro District have launched an investigation into a shooting incident that resulted in the death of Uwimana Rashid Baker, a 35-year-old resident of Rugyendabare village in Nyundo sub-county.

The incident occurred at Chameleon Hotel, where Baker was reportedly shot and killed by PC Wilson Bazimaziki, a security guard.

According to police reports, Baker was shot after allegedly attempting to harm Bazimaziki with a panga while evading arrest. The shooting occurred during an altercation between Baker and Komuhangi Stephen, a shopkeeper in Rugyendabare village. Baker, armed with a panga, reportedly attacked Stephen, squeezing his neck and demanding money. Residents intervened, rescuing Stephen on the night of December 1, 2023, at approximately 8:00 PM.

During the confrontation, Baker sustained a gunshot wound to the leg (tibia). The panga was recovered from him after he fell. Despite being rushed to Kisoro Hospital, Baker succumbed to his injuries en route. Police have classified Baker as a security threat due to his attempt on Komuhangi Stephen’s life.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the initiation of a General Enquiry File (GEF) to thoroughly investigate the circumstances surrounding Baker’s death. A team of officers was dispatched to the crime scene to meticulously examine and document the area.

Maate stated that relevant witness statements have been obtained, and Komuhangi Stephen has undergone a medical examination. Additionally, a postmortem has been conducted to further shed light on the events leading to Baker’s demise.
