A driver employed by the health ministry, Louis Odoch, has been remanded to Luzira Prison over suspicions of stealing a cylinder head valued at 15 million shillings.

The Anti-Corruption Court, presided over by Senior Principal Grade One Magistrate Abert Asiimwe, remanded Odoch on December 5, 2023. The remand was necessitated by Odoch’s apparent inability to comprehend the English language, leading to the need for an interpreter. The remand is set to last until December 8, allowing time to arrange for an interpreter for Odoch.

Accompanying Odoch in remand is Don Abraham Olof, a mechanic residing in Layibi Centre Bardege, Gulu city. Odoch is facing an embezzlement charge under section 19(a) of the Anti-Corruption Act of 2009, with a potential sentence of up to 14 years in jail or a fine of 6.7 million shillings, or both, if convicted.

Meanwhile, Olof is accused of theft under sections 254 and 261 of the Penal Code, carrying a possible 10-year imprisonment upon conviction.

The prosecution alleges that Odoch, employed as a driver, and Olof, a mechanic, collaborated in the theft of a specific cylinder head—a new model J79 3 Donors—from an ambulance registered under UG 6840M. The alleged theft occurred in July 2022, between Gulu Regional Referral Hospital and a garage on Oringi Road in Gulu city.
