Between December 30, 2023, and January 1, 2024, a tragic total of 26 people lost their lives in road crashes, as reported by the Police. The same period also witnessed 62 individuals sustaining severe injuries, according to the Traffic Police.

Addressing journalists at Naguru Police headquarters on Tuesday, January 2, 2023, Traffic and Road Safety Police spokesperson Michael Kananura revealed that the victims comprised 11 bodaboda riders, four passengers, 13 pedestrians, one pedal cyclist, and one driver.

Of particular concern was the fact that pedestrians accounted for half of the fatalities, with 13 individuals losing their lives in accidents. Kananura emphasized the importance of safe road practices, urging the public to avoid crossing roads from the back of vehicles. He advised pedestrians to walk from the right-hand side, use designated Zebra crossings, refrain from running while crossing the road, and consider wearing bright clothing for visibility.

Additionally, Kananura issued a caution to drivers, urging them to adhere to the prescribed speed limits. He encouraged passengers to report any reckless driving behavior by contacting the Police helpline at 0800199099 or utilizing social media platforms for prompt assistance.
