The State Minister for Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Ms. Joyce Nabbosa Ssebugwawo, revealed that the ICT sector currently employs over 1.3 million Ugandans and possesses the potential for further job creation. Speaking at the launch of the revamped National Innovation Hub in Kampala, she commended the sector’s annual growth rate of 14.8%, surpassing the national average GDP growth rate of 6.3%.

Ms. Ssebugwawo emphasized the global significance of the ICT sector, stating that it is one of the fastest-growing sectors with ample opportunities for dynamic and well-equipped individuals. The minister highlighted the hub’s role as a milestone for the entire nation, especially for addressing the pressing challenge of youth unemployment.

With approximately 41% of Ugandan youth (around 9.3 million individuals aged 18 to 30) not engaged in education, employment, or training, Ms. Ssebugwawo stressed the urgency for action. The revamped National Innovation Hub represents hope for the youth, providing a platform for skills development, innovation, and economic engagement.

Dr. Aminah Zawedde, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of ICT & National Guidance, emphasized the transformative impact of the hub’s renovation. Since the revamp, there has been a notable increase of over 190% in youth-led enterprises and innovators utilizing the hub, showcasing its crucial role in empowering the next generation of digital leaders in Uganda.

The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Resident Representative, Ms. Elsie Attafuah, highlighted the high-end technology and facilities incorporated into the multimedia hub to support the creative aspirations of Uganda’s youth. The revamped space is designed to nurture innovation and encourage creative thinking among the youth.

The national innovation hub currently houses 32 companies, each contributing to various innovations. Notable developments include ALIBATA, UZAZI, and the Parish Development Management Information System.
