Tayebwa Calls for Clarity on Public Service Recruitment Ban

The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has instructed the Ministry of Public Service to inform Parliament about the timeline for lifting the ban on public service recruitment. This directive came in response to a request from Hon. Patrick Isingoma, the Member of Parliament for Hoima East City Division, seeking a report on when the ban would be lifted.

Isingoma highlighted the adverse impact of the recruitment ban in Hoima, where essential work has come to a halt across all Local Governments. In light of this, the Deputy Speaker directed the Ministry of Public Service to present a statement to update Parliament on the anticipated resumption of recruitment in new cities, aiming to facilitate the smooth operation of government activities.

To address concerns such as ghost workers, the Ministries of Finance and Public Service conducted a physical validation exercise for public servants nationwide. A recent Auditor General’s report, covering the period ending June 2023, disclosed that 60,847 out of 133,670 approved positions in 75 government ministries, departments, agencies, and 167 local governments have remained vacant for over two years.
