Within the ranks of the Opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC)-Katonga faction, a heated debate has arisen regarding the potential formation of a new political party. As the 2026 General Election approaches, internal divisions have prompted discussions about the best course of action for the faction’s future.

While opinions within the faction appear to be divided, there is a consensus among leaders regarding the importance of allowing all party members to voice their opinions on the matter. The faction’s National Council recently decided to broaden the scope of consultation, seeking a national consensus before making any definitive decisions.

Some members, like Mr. Wafula Oguttu, a founding member, acknowledge the idea of forming a new party but express caution, emphasizing that the primary objective should be to remove President Museveni from office. They argue that a social movement may be more effective in achieving this goal, as it cannot be easily compromised by external influences.

This sentiment is echoed by Dr. Kizza Besigye, the founding leader of FDC, who advocates for a social movement uniting people from various political backgrounds. However, others, such as Mr. Dan Wandera Ogalo, express disappointment at the potential collapse of FDC but acknowledge the rights of members to decide the party’s future direction.

The National Council meeting explored various alternatives, including the possibility of reconciliation with the Najjanankumbi faction. However, the final decision will be left to a planned National Delegate’s conference in two months’ time.

Despite the internal disagreements, leaders like Mr. Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda emphasize the importance of focusing on the broader goal of fighting to rescue Uganda, rather than getting bogged down by party affiliations or names.
