The government has escalated its efforts to manage sewage and faecal matter in Kamuli, Luuka, Kaliro, and Buyende districts by providing two cesspool trucks acquired with support from the African Development Bank (AfDB).
The regional manager of Eastern Umbrella of Water and Sanitation in the Ministry of Water and Environment, Eng Deneth Ngabirano, highlighted Kamuli town as a focal point for the initiative due to the presence of a faecal sludge management facility. The acquisition of the trucks aims to address sanitation challenges in the region and reduce environmental pollution caused by improper waste disposal practices.
Eng Ngabirano emphasized the simplicity and effectiveness of managing faecal sludge, especially in areas without central sewage systems. The donated trucks, capable of carrying up to 8,000 litres of faecal matter each, provide a significant improvement compared to private trucks in terms of capacity and cost efficiency.
Additionally, Ms Catherine Orishaba, the Principal Engineer in the Ministry of Water and Environment, emphasized the importance of sanitation education for school children and community members to ensure sustainable water resource management and environmental conservation.
The Kamuli municipality Principal Health Inspector, Mr Robert Kunya, expressed gratitude for the support received from the Ministry of Water and Environment, highlighting the challenges faced in sewage management prior to the acquisition of the cesspool trucks.
