The Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Nabbanja Robinah, recently conducted bilateral discussions with a delegation from South Korea, delving into the prospects and opportunities awaiting Uganda at the upcoming Korea-Africa Summit set to be held in Seoul.
Heading the Korean delegation was Mr. Jung Kihong, the Executive Director for the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit, accompanied by His Excellency Park Sung-Soo, the South Korean Ambassador to Uganda. The meeting transpired at the Prime Minister’s office in Kampala, showcasing the growing ties between the two nations.
During the session, Prime Minister Nabbanja highlighted the enduring amicable relationship between Uganda and South Korea, underscored by numerous past exchanges. She expressed gratitude for South Korea’s ongoing support towards Uganda’s developmental aspirations.
Emphasizing Uganda’s eagerness to leverage the Korea-Africa Summit, Nabbanja articulated that the nation anticipates significant benefits, particularly in the areas prioritized for the summit’s focus. She extended a formal invitation to the President of South Korea, advocating for a visit to Uganda to bolster bilateral ties further.
Dunstan Balaba, the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Prime Minister, echoed Nabbanja’s sentiments, accentuating the potential windfalls awaiting Uganda through its participation in the Korea-Africa Summit. He particularly highlighted South Korea’s successful model of organizing villages into productive units, a strategy that Uganda seeks to adopt for its own development agenda.
Balaba further underscored the relevance of South Korea’s approach to land management, particularly in mitigating the adverse effects of natural disasters such as landslides, which have plagued Uganda in recent years. He cited ongoing initiatives in select Ugandan regions aimed at replicating South Korea’s village-based production model.
Mr. Jung Kihong, leading the South Korean delegation, expressed optimism regarding Uganda’s participation in the upcoming summit, emphasizing the nation’s pivotal role on the global stage as the Chair of the G77 + China and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).
The 2024 Korea-Africa Summit, scheduled for June this year, holds significant promise for Uganda’s engagement and cooperation with South Korea and the wider African continent. President Yoweri Museveni’s attendance at the summit is eagerly anticipated, marking yet another milestone in Uganda’s diplomatic outreach efforts.
