Patrick Okidi, Koboko – A 20-year-old girl who was defiled, impregnated, and dropped out of school has completed a six-month course at Koboko Technical Institute and earned a first-class certificate in carpentry and joinery.

Chandiru Cicily, from Moiga village in Aliba sub-county, Obongi district, emerged as the best among 50 other students selected for the carpentry and joinery course at Koboko Technical Institute.

At the end of the six-month course and internship, Chandiru emerged as the overall best student, earning a first-class certificate in carpentry and joinery, sponsored by the Rural Initiative for Community Empowerment (RICE) West Nile—an NGO based in West Nile.

After emerging as the best student among the 50 students, Koboko Technical Institute has offered Chandiru Cicily a job as an instructor at the institute.

Presiding over the graduation ceremony, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Obongi, Mr. Samuel Mpimbaza Hashaka, thanked RICE West Nile NGO for working with the NRM government to fight poverty in the West Nile sub-region by sponsoring young people for skilling courses and also providing tools to all students completing the courses.

Hashaka handed over tools bought by RICE West Nile to all the 50 students who completed their courses, as jubilation and excitement filled the day. He advised young people to stop engaging in bad activities like mairungi chewing, opium smoking, alcoholism, and sex before marriage. Instead, he encouraged them to become job creators and employees by taking advantage of skilling courses funded by State House and partners like RICE West Nile.
