Efforts are underway to ensure the safe return of a herd of elephants that wandered into Otuke district back to their natural habitat in Kidepo Valley National Park.
Authorities, alongside the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), are actively involved in managing the situation, diligently searching for the elephants believed to have strayed into the area in search of food and water.
The unexpected presence of seven elephants in Ocholo Pechor village, Ogwete sub-county, was reported on June 2, 2024, around noon. Concerns arose over potential damage and safety threats following reports of two individuals sustaining serious injuries, who were promptly transported to Abim Hospital for medical treatment.
Patrick Okema, the spokesperson for the North Kyoga Police, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, highlighting the swift response initiated by the authorities.
“We were alerted by residents about the presence of elephants in their village. Immediately, we contacted the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA), and a team was dispatched to manage the situation. They are currently working to guide the elephants back to the park,” Okema stated.
The timely intervention was made possible by the vigilant actions of the local community, for which Okema expressed gratitude.
“We commend the community members for their vigilance and prompt reporting, which facilitated a rapid response,” he added.
The Uganda Wildlife Authority, entrusted with wildlife management in Uganda, promptly mobilized a team to address the situation. Their primary objective is to safely lead the elephants back to Kidepo Valley National Park, ensuring the well-being of both the animals and the villagers, as emphasized by Okema.
“At present, no damages or further injuries have been reported. The UWA team is focused on guiding the elephants back to their natural habitat without causing harm to either the animals or the villagers. Both the police and wildlife authorities are closely monitoring the situation,” he affirmed.
Kidepo Valley National Park, situated in northeastern Uganda, is renowned for its rich biodiversity, including thriving populations of elephants. Instances of wildlife straying beyond park boundaries, particularly during dry seasons when resources are scarce, are not uncommon.

Over 470 bird species have been recorded within the park, including numerous raptors, ostriches, and vibrant endemic species such as the Karamoja apalis and the black-breasted barbet.
The park’s remote location and relatively low visitor numbers contribute to its sense of wilderness and exclusivity, offering visitors a unique and immersive safari experience. Activities within the park include game drives, guided nature walks, and cultural encounters with the indigenous Karamojong people, who inhabit the surrounding areas.
