The Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) has successfully received its first shipment of petroleum products at the port of Mombasa. The shipment includes 78 million liters of petrol and 65,000 tons of diesel.
The first ship arrived at the Kipevu Oil Terminal II in Mombasa at dawn on Wednesday, docking at approximately 6:10 am. This vessel carried 58,000 metric tons of petrol, which will be transferred into the Kenya Pipeline Company infrastructure for transportation. The petrol will be delivered to Eldoret and Kisumu, from where it will be loaded onto trucks and transported to Uganda.
Later that same day, another ship carrying 65,000 metric tons of diesel was scheduled to dock at the same terminal at midnight. This diesel shipment will follow a similar process, being discharged into the pipeline infrastructure for further distribution.
According to announcements by UNOC on it’s online platforms, this milestone marks a significant step for UNOC, as it embarks on the importation and distribution of petroleum products. UNOC has stated that the efficient handling and transport of these shipments are crucial for ensuring that the petroleum reaches its intended destinations in Uganda without delay.
Another statement from the oil monopoly said the arrival of these shipments not only highlights the capabilities of the Kipevu Oil Terminal II but also underscores the importance of regional cooperation in the petroleum supply chain. The coordination between the port authorities, the Kenya Pipeline Company, and UNOC is essential for the smooth transfer and delivery of these critical resources.
The successful docking and discharge of petroleum products are vital for Uganda’s energy sector, providing much-needed fuel for various economic activities.
The energy company has said this development aligns with UNOC’s mandate to secure and manage Uganda’s petroleum resources effectively, ensuring a steady supply to meet the country’s growing energy demands for industrial, business and domestic consumption.
