South African National Rescued After Kidnapping Ordeal in Kampala

Police in Kampala successfully rescued Amos Masoga Morubura, a 40-year-old South African national, on August 1, 2024, after he was abducted by two Ugandan acquaintances. The rescue followed a distressing video sent to Morubura’s family demanding a ransom.

According to Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire, Morubura was kidnapped on July 31, 2024, in the Bandogo zone of Makindye Division, Kampala district. At the time, Morubura was visiting Uganda and residing in Bandogo. The kidnapping took place around Munyonyo, where he was allegedly tortured by his abductors. The incident was initially reported through a video circulating on social media, which led to the police intervention.

Owoyesigyire explained that the Flying Squad Unit of the police contacted Morubura’s brother in South Africa to gather more information about the kidnappers. The investigation led to the discovery of Morubura tied up and showing signs of torture in a house in Bandogo. He was subsequently taken to Katwe Police Station, where he provided a statement.

Ugandan Friends Behind South African’s Abduction

Police learned that Morubura had arrived in Uganda on May 28, 2024, and had been staying with friends. He had confronted one of his Ugandan friends, Peter Mulondo, and another individual named Elijah, over unauthorized withdrawals from his bank account. This confrontation reportedly provoked the two, who then kidnapped him on July 31, as he was heading to the airport. They demanded a ransom of 100,000 South African Rand from his brother. The video of Morubura, posted on social media by his brother, drew public attention and aided in his rescue.

The suspects remain at large, and efforts are underway to locate and prosecute them. The Kampala Metropolitan Police have praised the Flying Squad officers for their effective response and successful rescue of Morubura.
