General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, Chief of Defence Forces of the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF), returned to Kampala on Tuesday afternoon following an official visit to Kigali, Rwanda. His trip was timed to coincide with Rwandan President Paul Kagame’s inauguration for a fourth term on Sunday.
General Kainerugaba, who also serves as Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, arrived in Kigali on Saturday in preparation for Kagame’s swearing-in ceremony. He was welcomed by General Mubarakh Muganga, Chief of Defence Staff of the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF).
The delegation from the UPDF was composed of several key figures: Major General James Birungi, Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security; Brigadier General Richard Karemire, who oversees the department of formal education, sports, and culture; Alexander Akandwanaho; and businessman Andrew Mwenda.
On Monday, General Kainerugaba and his team visited the RDF headquarters in Kigali. During their visit, they engaged in discussions with General Muganga concerning bilateral and regional security issues.
In the evening, General Muganga hosted a dinner for the UPDF delegation at the Kigali Convention Centre. General Birungi represented General Kainerugaba at the event.
