Equity Bank Uganda has issued a public advisory cautioning customers against accessing their bank accounts through public Wi-Fi networks, citing serious security risks.
In a message shared on X (formerly Twitter) under its “Beera Steady” campaign, the bank warned that public internet connections, commonly found in cafes, hotels, and other shared spaces, are often unsecured and can expose users to cyber threats, including data theft and unauthorized access to financial information.
The advisory emphasizes that customers should instead rely on personal mobile data when conducting sensitive transactions such as mobile banking, online transfers, and account logins.
“Public networks are not secure. Always use your mobile data when accessing your bank account,” the bank stated.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over cybercrime and digital fraud targeting unsuspecting users who connect to open or poorly protected Wi-Fi networks.
Equity Bank Uganda also urged customers to remain vigilant and act quickly if they detect any unusual activity on their accounts. Customers are advised to immediately report suspicious transactions or security concerns through the bank’s toll-free line.
The bank provided 0800 232 700 as the dedicated number for reporting any suspicious activity.
Through its ongoing “Beera Steady” campaign, Equity Bank continues to promote financial safety awareness, encouraging customers to adopt secure digital practices as the use of online and mobile banking services expands across Uganda.
