The Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) has launched a compliance drive targeting boda boda riders in West Nile to promote tax registration. This initiative, which began in March, aims to address the issue of smuggling involving unregistered motorcycles in the region. The campaign, initially set to end in June, has been extended to September to ensure all riders have the chance to register.

In a recent meeting at the OPM grounds in Arua, Ajiga Mansur, the enforcement head, praised the riders for their positive response to the campaign. He noted a significant reduction in the number of unregistered motorcycles and urged riders to encourage their peers to participate.

“The registration promotion officially ended on June 30, 2024. However, based on requests for an extension, we have extended the deadline. Some riders still have not complied. This is your final chance to register and avoid penalties,” Ajiga said.

Ajiga also warned against using smuggled fuel, which is often adulterated and sold in misleading quantities. During the meeting, he showcased samples of confiscated fuel that were labeled as one liter but contained less. This demonstration aimed to highlight the risks of dealing with illicit fuel and underscore URA’s role in protecting riders from fraud.

“This is part of our effort to shield you from dishonest sellers. Some of you may think URA is against you, but we are here to help,” Ajiga added. He encouraged riders to collaborate with URA to combat illegal trade.

Clare Sanyu, the Stakeholder Coordinator for the region, supported Ajiga’s message, urging riders to take advantage of the reduced registration fees and the extended deadline. She emphasized the importance of registration for maintaining good public relations and a positive image.

Amaku Swadik, interim vice chairperson of the Boda Boda Association, commended URA for the informative meeting. He acknowledged the session’s benefits in fostering collaboration and improving the boda boda industry’s operations.

Bako Judith, the Arua City Deputy Resident City Commissioner, also attended the meeting. She praised URA’s educational efforts and acknowledged the boda boda association’s contributions to revenue collection. Bako noted challenges within the association, including lack of accountability and leadership disputes. She expressed her commitment to resolving these issues and ensuring proper management of the association.
