Three Unregistered Companies Linked to Deputy President Gachagua

Official records reveal that three companies associated with Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, which were mentioned in a motion to remove him from office, were registered between 2001 and January 2024. These companies have their offices located in Nairobi, including on State House Road, Lang’ata, Nairobi’s central business district, and at the Deputy President’s official residence in Karen.

These companies are expected to be key evidence in the ongoing process to impeach Deputy President Gachagua, who has often referred to himself as a “truth-teller.” However, he recently admitted in public that some of his family members own the mentioned companies, drawing attention to his business dealings.

A detailed investigation by Taifa Jumapili revealed that three out of the 22 companies linked to the Deputy President are not listed in the records of the Registrar of Companies. The ownership of 19 of these companies is shared between Gachagua, his wife Dorcas Wanjiku Gachagua, and their two sons, Kevin Gachagua and Keith Ikinu.

One issue that may arise during the impeachment proceedings is whether it is legal for a public official to register private companies using official residences as business addresses.

The investigation further uncovered that two of these companies operate from the Deputy President’s official residence, while a third is registered at Harambee House Annex, the Deputy President’s office.

According to official records from the Registrar of Companies, Deputy President Gachagua is listed as a director of Grand Bypass Apartments Limited, which is owned by Vipingo Beach Resort Limited. Other directors of Grand Bypass Apartments include John Mwai Mathenge and Peter Njoroge Regeru. This company was registered on January 11, 2024.

Additionally, the records show that Gachagua’s wife, Dorcas Wanjiku Gachagua, owns Spirit Way Ltd, which was registered on November 14, 2023, more than a year after the 2022 General Election. Mrs. Gachagua holds all 100 shares of the company, whose registered office is located at Fortis Suites on Hospital Road, Upper Hill, Nairobi.

Fortis Vis Group Limited is owned by Gachagua’s sons, Kevin and Keith, who each hold 50% of the company’s shares. This company, registered on February 14, 2023, is one of the businesses operating from the Deputy President’s official residence, according to company registration records.
