A decades-old incident involving Minister of Water and Environment Maj Gen Kahinda Otafiire and Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba’s late mother-in-law, Jennifer Kuteesa, has resurfaced following the recent public exchange between Otafiire and Muhoozi.
Historical accounts indicate that Otafiire was involved in a confrontation with Jennifer Kuteesa in Kampala in October 1988, during which he reportedly drew a pistol.
Jennifer was the wife of former Foreign Affairs Minister Sam Kuteesa and the mother of Charlotte Kuteesa, who later married Gen Muhoozi in 1999.
The circumstances surrounding the confrontation have been reported differently over the years, but accounts agree that a heated exchange occurred and Otafiire drew a gun.
The incident reportedly had serious consequences, with Otafiire tendering his resignation from government the following month. Then-President Yoweri Museveni accepted the resignation.
Museveni reportedly stressed that the NRM government would not tolerate indiscipline, regardless of the position held by the person involved.
