Kampala Metropolitan police spokesperson, Mr. Patrick Onyango, addressed the public on Wednesday evening, stating that there is credible intelligence indicating that political activists, particularly from the National Unity Platform (NUP), are organizing to welcome NUP president Hon. Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, back to Uganda at Entebbe International Airport on October 5, 2023.
The police have announced heightened security measures along Entebbe Road and other routes leading to Mr. Robert Kyagulanyi’s residence in Magere, Wakiso District. They consider the planned welcome party for Bobi Wine to be illegal and have warned against it.
Mr. Onyango mentioned, “The organizers of the alleged welcome event intend to make a procession from Entebbe International Airport through various areas, including Kitoro, Katabi, Kitala, Kitende, Kajjansi, Lubowa through the CBD, Kalerwe up to Magere, Kasangati.”
In light of these developments, Mr. Onyango advised the organizers to halt their mobilization efforts, and he urged members of the public not to participate in illegal processions. The police will take action against anyone engaging in unlawful activities, and those arrested will be taken to court.
Mr. Onyango assured the public along Entebbe Highway that they should carry on with their daily activities without fear, as the police will deploy officers to maintain security. Roadblocks will be set up at various points, including Zzana, Kajjansi, and Kisubi, where vehicles heading to the airport will be inspected. There will also be three checkpoints from Kitooro to the airport, different from the usual ones.
He expressed appreciation for those who have chosen not to participate in the “illegal planned activities,” including boda boda riders, taxi operators, the business community, and young people in the ghetto.
Bobi Wine, who is currently in South Africa, is expected to arrive in the country at 10 am tomorrow, following his international mobilization tours in Canada and South Africa.
Mr. Onyango’s address comes shortly after the arrest of seven NUP supporters in Entebbe for holding an illegal assembly.
