The Police PRO for North Kyoga Region, SP Jimmy Patrick Okema, issued a statement regarding the ongoing Lango Cultural Leadership dispute.
On October 31, 2024, the High Court of Uganda at Lira (Civil Suit No. 10 of 2024) delivered a ruling via email. The court nullified the elections of both parties involved in the dispute and issued a permanent injunction, restraining them from performing any rituals or activities related to installation.
Okema urged both parties to respect the court’s ruling and maintain calm. He emphasized that the police would not tolerate any illegal actions carried out under the names of the Lango Cultural Foundation or Lango Cultural Institutions.
The police condemned the act of vandalism that occurred on November 1, 2024, when a Toyota Highlander (Reg. No. UBD 315D), allegedly belonging to H.H. Yosam Odur Ebii, the Won Nyaci me Lango, was damaged at the Lango Cultural Center. A General Enquiry File (GEF) has been registered at Lira City CPS to investigate the incident and apprehend the culprits.
To maintain law and order, police have deployed officers at the Lango Cultural Center and Got Ojwang in Otuke. The planned coronation on November 2, 2024, has been postponed until a new court order is issued.
The public is advised to remain calm and carry on with their normal activities. Police will conduct motorized and foot patrols within and around Lira City and the entire region to ensure peace and security.
