(Kisoro) – President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has paid tribute to the late Sarah Nyirabashitsi Mateke, the former Minister of State for Defence and Woman Member of Parliament for Kisoro District, who passed away on September 7, 2024, at the age of 50.
On Tuesday, November 12, 2024, President Museveni visited the bereaved family in Kisoro to offer his condolences and support. During his visit, the President laid a wreath on the grave where Mateke’s remains are buried. He was received by the family, including Dr. Philemon Mateke, the Kisoro District NRM chairperson and father of the late minister.
In his message, President Museveni described Mateke as a woman with a “good soul” who had a significant impact on the country and left behind a lasting legacy. He expressed his sorrow and solidarity with the family, stating, “I have come to stand with you in this time of grief. Mateke was my daughter who had a good soul. She made a significant impact and left a legacy.”
The visit by President Museveni highlighted the deep personal connection he had with the late minister. He emphasized the strong bond between them, underlining his commitment to supporting the family during this difficult time.
Dr. Philemon Mateke, the father of the deceased, thanked President Museveni for his heartfelt gesture. He expressed his appreciation for the President’s visit, saying, “We are grateful for your presence here and for honouring Sarah’s memory. It means a lot to our family.”
