Buganda Royals Remember Kabaka Mutesa II 55 Years Later

Hundreds of people gathered at Lubaga Cathedral in Kampala on November 26, 2024, for a memorial service marking 55 years since the death of Kabaka Edward Muteesa II, the former king of Buganda.

(Kampala) – On Tuesday, November 26, 2024, members of the Buganda Kingdom, including royals and government officials, gathered at Lubaga Cathedral in Kampala to commemorate the life and legacy of Kabaka Edward Mutesa II. The memorial Mass, held in honor of the late king, marked the 55th anniversary of his death.

The Holy Mass was led by Archbishop Paul Ssemwogerere, and the service was attended by several notable figures from the Buganda Kingdom. Among those present were Nnaabagereka Sylvia Nagginda, the Queen of Buganda, and Kabaka Mutesa’s children, including Princesses Dorothy Nassolo, Agnes Nabaloga, Sarah Kagere, Dina Kigga, and their brother, David Wasajja, along with his wife, Marion Nankya.




The memorial service also saw the participation of Kabaka Mutesa’s grandchildren, with Princess Victoria Nkinzi, daughter of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi, the current king of Buganda, leading the group.




Kabaka Mutesa, born on November 19, 1924, in Kampala, passed away on November 21, 1969, under mysterious circumstances. His death, which occurred in Rotherhithe, United Kingdom, was suspected to have been the result of poisoning. Despite the passage of time, his legacy continues to be remembered and celebrated by the people of Buganda.




The memorial event was attended by hundreds of people, including officials from the Mengo Government, as well as members of the general public, all coming together to honor the king’s contributions to the kingdom and the country.
