Lira, Uganda – The political atmosphere in Erute North is heating up following the declaration of youthful NRM politician Patrick Ongom, commonly known as “Ongom Aregedeng,” from Erute North constituency, who has announced his intention to contest for the MP seat in 2026.

Aregedeng has reignited hope among the locals in Erute North for a pro-people leadership they have been yearning for.

Speaking to The Ankole Times, concerned voters revealed that they are excited about the candidacy of their own son, Patrick Ongom, and are hopeful for positive change. Susan Ayo, a 39-year-old mother of three, expressed her joy, stating that they are thrilled to see their own son, who has been involved with the community from the outset, declare his intention to run for the Erute North MP seat.

She urged the MP hopeful Ongom to prioritize advocating for the well-being of the youth, mothers, and orphans once elected to the 12th Parliament.

Ayo added that many politicians, once entrusted with leadership positions, tend to misbehave and forget the women’s agenda, even though women play a crucial role in shaping developmental projects within the community.

Meanwhile, Denis Opio from Aromo Sub-county in Erute North could not hide his excitement upon hearing that Ongom has joined the race for Erute North MP.

Currently, MP hopeful Patrick Ongom is engaged in consultations with the community regarding his bid to contest in the upcoming election. Ongom, in an interview with this publication, revealed that the biggest challenge facing Erute North County is the lack of coordination among some leaders, which has led to poor service delivery and stunted development.

He also disclosed his plans to lobby and network with development partners and high-profile leaders to fight poverty within the community.

Ongom is well-known in the area as a great leader whose vision, mission, and contributions during his time as a leader in the Lira District Council led to the creation of new town councils and sub-counties in Erute North constituency.

When contacted, the MP hopeful shared that he has been actively supporting the education and health sectors in the area, and is currently extending support to his community on his own initiative.

The seat is currently held by Hon. MP Akello Christine, also known as Gwok Ka Dako.
