Police in Kazo District are investigating the tragic death of Rev. Messach Kahembera, a 64-year-old overseer of the United Pentecostal Church, who was allegedly killed by his sons on Wednesday morning.
Rev. Kahembera, a resident of Meru Meru village in Kataraza Parish, Nkungu Sub-County, was reportedly involved in long-standing domestic disputes before his death.
Rwizi Region Police spokesperson Samson Kasasira confirmed the incident, stating that a manhunt is underway for the suspects, who fled after the attack. “We are actively searching for the suspects. Their arrest will help us determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic event,” Kasasira said.
Family members say Rev. Kahembera had tried to support his sons despite their troubled past. His elder brother, Boaz Turyagyenda, who also serves as the councilor for Kataraza Parish, revealed that the deceased had previously helped his sons secure release from prison.
“My brother tried to help his children turn their lives around, but sadly, this is how he was repaid,” Turyagyenda lamented. He added that the family had already suffered hardship following the death of Kahembera’s wife last year, which resulted in the imprisonment of several family members.
Local leaders have condemned the killing, urging families to resolve conflicts peacefully. Seth Byaruhanga, the district councilor for Nkungu Sub-County, called for community intervention to prevent similar tragedies. “This is a very unfortunate and heartbreaking act. We must work together as a community to end domestic violence,” Byaruhanga stated.
Rev. Kahembera’s body was taken to Kazo Health Centre IV for a postmortem examination as police continue their search for the suspects.
Residents and church members have called for swift justice and stronger measures to address domestic violence, emphasizing the need for community-based conflict resolution strategies to prevent further loss of life.
