Leaders in Kisoro District have criticized the government’s decision to allocate UGX 198.7 billion in the 2025/26 financial year to combat corruption, arguing that the funds are likely to be misused rather than achieving their intended purpose.

On March 8, 2025, the State Minister of Finance for General Duties, Henry Musasizi, announced that the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) caucus, chaired by President Yoweri Museveni at State House Entebbe, had approved the allocation to facilitate anti-corruption efforts. The announcement comes at a time when several government programs previously funded by international donors are struggling due to aid suspensions, including funding cuts imposed by former U.S. President Donald Trump.

In an exclusive interview, Kisoro District Councilor Baker Niyigaba criticized the allocation, arguing that such large sums of money are likely to be misappropriated by top officials rather than effectively used to fight corruption.

He emphasized the need for collaboration between leaders and the public as a more effective way to tackle corruption.

Similarly, Ndikuyeze Ramadhan, the Vice Chairperson of the NRM in Kisoro District, condemned the high levels of corruption in the country. He urged political leaders to take the lead in fighting corruption by sensitizing communities on its dangers.

Meanwhile, Kisoro District Vice Chairperson LCV, Alex Nambajimana, expressed disappointment over the continued misuse of public funds through corruption and embezzlement. He criticized the government for remaining silent while such acts persist.

Instead, he suggested that the funds be directed toward service delivery, such as infrastructure development, to benefit the public.
