Lira District, Uganda – The political atmosphere surrounding the Lira City mayoral race continues to evolve daily as the 2026 general elections approach. A vibrant young man, Ogwang Moses Adonyo, is making headlines as he announces his intention to contest for the position of Lira City Mayor under the NRM party ticket.
Known to many for his role in animal compensation efforts in the Lango sub-region, Ogwang Adonyo has gained considerable popularity in Lira City, particularly within leadership circles, as he vies for the mayoral seat.
Who Is Ogwang Adonyo?
Mr. Moses Ogwang Adonyo, aged 45, is a native of Lira City East Division. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Community Health and a Bachelor of Science in Public Health, both from the University of the People, California, USA. He is a former LCV Councilor of Adwokkwok in the then Lira District Local Government Council and served as the Chairperson of the Health and Education Committee from 2011 to 2016.
Adonyo also has a diverse background, having worked as a Nursing and Public Health Relations Officer in the UPDF, as well as the Executive Director of FICRD Uganda, an NGO that provided various community health services in the Lango, Acholi, Teso, Bugisu, and Budama sub-regions.
He is currently the Volunteer Country Coordinator for the United Nations International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN) and is a member of CIVICS and Amnesty International. He also coordinates World Beyond War in Uganda.
Adonyo serves on the board of the Malaria Civil Society Network and MACIS-MOH-Global Funds. At present, he is the Regional Coordinator for the Lango Debt War Claimants Association, where over 24,000 claimants, particularly elderly individuals in the Lango sub-region, have benefited from government compensation.
Adonyo’s extensive community service includes founding the Youth Dutch Listen Club under DW Radio and the Uganda German Cultural Society Kampala from 1996-2000.
His Vision for Lira City
Mr. Adonyo has outlined several key priorities for Lira City should he be elected. These include improving development across all sectors, including urban planning and waste management, promoting micro-businesses within the business community, and advancing the development of SMEs and large businesses.
Additionally, he aims to enhance services in education, healthcare, water supply, electricity, and security.
His Observations on Lira’s Future
Ogwang Moses Adonyo is confident that by 2026-2031, Lira City will be a place of unity, reconciliation, and leadership with a difference.
The current mayor, Sam Atul, is believed to be contesting for the Lira City West Division seat under the NRM party.
