During a political forum, Hon Mathias Mpuuga, the president of the Democratic Alliance, criticized the reasoning of some opposition Ugandans who claim that President Museveni and his administration would never permit substantial reforms, while simultaneously recognizing that certain opposition figures, like Nalukoola, have succeeded in elections within the same system.
“I have heard, rather oddly, some opposition leaders asserting that the pursuit of electoral reforms is futile and that Gen Museveni and his legislature will prevent them. So here’s a question: how can a Museveni who opposes reforms proclaim you as the winner?” Mpuuga posed.
For many years, Bobi Wine and other opposition figures have maintained that no level of reform can ensure free and fair elections as long as Museveni, whom they label a dictator, remains in power.
However, Hon Mpuuga proposed that instead of dismissing his concept of electoral reforms, the opposition should advocate for strategic changes rather than merely lamenting the current system while actively participating in it as MPs and receiving funding from it.
