Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda is still lamenting his decision to participate in the Kabaka Birthday Run over the weekend, as he faced heckling from NUP supporters who labeled him the “Museveni of Kira.”
The incident unfolded dramatically when Ssemujju Nganda tried to speak to attendees at the yearly event, only to be met with boos and chants from portions of the crowd. In a video that has circulated widely, NUP supporters can be heard accusing Ssemujju of overstaying in his position and acting like President Museveni, whom he has been vocal against for his grip on power.
The phrase “Museveni of Kira” seemed to be a dig at Ssemujju’s lengthy service as the local MP, as he has represented Kira Municipality since 2011. Some residents of Kiira feel that they have given Ssemujju Nganda plenty of time to transition out of politics and are looking to replace him with experienced NUP lawyer George Musisi.
It’s worth mentioning that the articulate MP was among the few legislators who secured a win in the Central region, particularly within Kampala Metropolitan, despite not being affiliated with NUP. Nevertheless, he has remained loyal to the FDC and has declined to switch to NUP despite facing numerous challenges.
Interestingly, there are NUP MPs who have also held their positions for the same duration as Ssemujju, such as Mukono Municipality MP, Hon Betty Nambooze, and Hon Muwanga Kuvumbi from Butambala, both of whom have been in power since 2011.
