Bugisu, Buganda, and Acholi Cultural Institutions to Provide Land for Youth-Led Tree Growing Under UNDP Funding

Mr. Steven Masiga (Bamasaaba spokesperson) with NFA sector heads from Mbarara and River Rwizi at the UNDP offices along Yusuf Lule Road, Kampala.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is in advanced stages of supporting youth across selected districts in Uganda to ensure their involvement in tree planting within their communities.

Steven Masiga, the spokesperson for the Bamasaaba cultural institution, revealed on Radio Uganda and UBC TV that the institution has been approached by the UNDP leadership in Uganda.

The request is for the Bamasaaba cultural institution to mobilize youth participation in this program, including the allocation of land for the UNDP-funded initiative.

Youth across Uganda are often not adequately involved in intergenerational programs such as tree planting, which can lead to a lack of sustainable fall-back options in their old age.

Masiga pledged to present this request to his cultural superiors for their guidance and approval.

The commitment to support youth in tree growing was made by the UNDP leadership in Kampala recently during a meeting with cultural institutions and other government agencies.

The meeting saw the attendance of cultural representatives from the Bamasaaba cultural institution, the Buganda Kingdom, and the Acholi cultural institution, among others. Also present were heads of government agencies and ministries, including Agriculture and the National Forestry Authority (NFA), as well as various youth groups.
