In recognition of Bugisu Sub-region’s historical role in the NRA liberation struggle, the honour of nominating President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his sixth term has been bestowed upon Buyela Christopher.
This gesture is seen as a celebration of Bugisu’s enduring contribution to the National Resistance Movement (NRM) and the liberation of Uganda.
Buyela, a well-known NRM mobiliser and youth advocate, expressed surprise at the news. “I didn’t know I was going to be the one to nominate the President,” he said. “But I am ready and happy. This is a big blessing, and I will do it with pride because I fully support President Museveni.”
The decision to assign this important role to someone from Bugisu reflects the region’s long-standing loyalty and sacrifices made during the liberation struggle. Buyela has already proven himself a dedicated party figure, particularly through his leadership in organising the first-ever Bugisu Youth Symposium—an event that was attended by President Museveni himself.
During the symposium, the President pledged support to youth groups in Bugisu, including job opportunities and financial assistance through associations and SACCOs. These funds are expected to be disbursed in August.
Responding to critics of President Museveni’s extended leadership, Buyela remarked, “People forget that Uganda has held regular elections every five years since 1996. Ugandans have always chosen their leader, and that is democracy. From Yoweri Kaguta Museveni to Tibuhaburwa, and now Semalungu—the people are still choosing him.”
Buyela Christopher’s selection is not only a personal honour but also a proud moment for the entire Bugisu Sub-region. It marks renewed national recognition of a region that played a significant role in Uganda’s journey toward peace and stability.
