Chinese Businessman Committed to High Court Over Alleged Murder of Partner

KAMPALA, Uganda — A Chinese businessman, Dai Jie, has been committed to the High Court to stand trial over the alleged murder of his business partner, Yang Wen Li, whose body was discovered in Mabira Forest, Jinja District, in July 2024.

The committal followed proceedings at Buganda Road Chief Magistrates Court, where prosecutors revealed that investigations into the case had been completed. The court has ordered Dai Jie to report to the court registrar on the first Monday of each month until the next High Court criminal session is convened.

According to court records, the two businessmen — both Chinese nationals — lived together at Haidah Plaza and jointly operated Top Hair Group Ltd, a beauty products company based at Galilaya Plaza in downtown Kampala.

Prosecution reports indicate that on July 6, 2024, Yang Wen Li left their office at around 3:00 p.m. and never returned. Two days later, Dai Jie reportedly appeared at work alone and informed a colleague that Yang had gone to investigate a missing vehicle.

When both men failed to return home, a missing person report was filed at Central Police Station (CPS) Kampala by another business associate. Subsequent investigations led to the grim discovery of Yang’s body in Mabira Forest, sparking suspicion and prompting Dai Jie’s arrest.

The High Court is now expected to set a date for the trial, where Dai Jie will answer to charges related to the alleged murder of his partner.
