President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has received the CAF President’s Outstanding Achievement Award, a recognition that highlights Uganda’s growing influence in African football and its role in the successful CHAN 2024 tournament.
The award was presented during the CAF Awards ceremony in Rabat, where CAF President Patrice Motsepe applauded Museveni and Ugandans for their support in hosting the championship alongside Kenya and Tanzania. According to CAF, Uganda’s organisation, security, and fan atmosphere stood out during the event.
WHY UGANDA WAS RECOGNISED
The honour is mainly tied to Uganda’s strong contribution to the 2024 African Nations Championship. CAF noted that the East African trio delivered one of the most efficient editions of the tournament in recent years.
Uganda’s leadership has also invested heavily in sports infrastructure, especially stadiums that will be vital for hosting the Africa Cup of Nations in 2027.
A BOOST AHEAD OF AFCON 2027
With Uganda set to co-host AFCON 2027, the award is seen as a vote of confidence. Construction works on major stadiums like Hoima and Akii-Bua are ongoing, while upgrades to Namboole and other facilities aim to meet CAF requirements.
These projects are expected to support local athletes, attract international visitors, and strengthen Uganda’s position as a regional football centre.
LOOKING FORWARD
While the award is a milestone, Uganda still faces the challenge of completing stadiums and ensuring all logistics are ready ahead of AFCON 2027.
Even so, the CAF recognition shows that the country is on the right track, and that its efforts in supporting sports development are being noticed across the continent.
