MBARARA, Uganda — Authorities at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital are seeking assistance for a 28-year-old mother who was reportedly abandoned by her husband after he discovered she was expecting triplets.
The woman, Obvious Atuhaire, a resident of Kagando Cell in Nyakayojo Division, Mbarara City, gave birth to the premature babies “two girls and a boy” at 35 weeks on February 3 at the regional referral hospital.
According to hospital authorities, Atuhaire’s husband, Moses Tukwatanise, reportedly left the family in September last year after an antenatal check-up confirmed she was carrying triplets.
Atuhaire, a peasant farmer who rents a single room in Nyakayojo, says she has struggled to support herself and the newborns during the hospital stay.
“I had saved about Shs100,000, but it has been exhausted on food and medication while at the hospital,” she said.
Hospital staff say the mother currently has no reliable support to care for the newborns, who require extra attention due to their premature birth.
Authorities at the hospital have since appealed to well-wishers and community leaders to support the mother with basic necessities, including baby clothes, food, and medical supplies, as she prepares to care for the three infants.
