Former Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, announced on Saturday that he sheltered Brian Mwenda, a fake lawyer wanted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, in his Mombasa offices during a manhunt.
In a video shared on October 14, 2023, Mike Sonko appeared alongside Brian Mwenda, vowing to take Mwenda to the DCI headquarters on Kiambu Road for a statement.
“We will assist this individual. DCI, we will bring him to your offices, perhaps on Monday or Tuesday for him to make a statement,” said Mike Sonko.
“If there are any charges against him, he is willing to face them in court,” Sonko added, expressing Mwenda’s readiness to cooperate with the authorities.
Conversely, Mwenda asserted his readiness to clarify the situation. “I am prepared to provide the real context of what’s happening because it’s hard to believe that I possess all this expertise,” stated the accused in Sonko’s video.
In a show of solidarity with Mwenda, the former governor called upon his friends and renowned lawyers to support Mwenda and represent him in court. Sonko reassured Mwenda, saying, “You are in safe hands, don’t worry, young man, we will take you to the DCI. I’ve verified his identity, and he is a young man.”
Brian Mwenda faces accusations of impersonating a Nairobi-based lawyer and assuming the identity of a certified attorney. The Law Society of Kenya, which raised concerns about his qualifications, also alleged that he deceived unsuspecting clients and damaged the reputation of the association.
The LSK invited the DCI to locate and apprehend Mwenda, who was found to have practiced law without a valid license. Reports suggested that Mwenda was a criminology student at Chuka University.
