SOROTI – Three Members of Parliament from the Teso sub-region are reportedly facing financial pressure after allegedly borrowing substantial sums from commercial banks in anticipation of securing lucrative leadership positions in Parliament.
Sources familiar with the matter claim that each of the legislators borrowed approximately Shs1 billion from different financial institutions during the election period. The loans were reportedly taken after they were assured that they would be appointed as commissioners or to other influential parliamentary positions, where they expected to earn additional benefits that would enable them to service the debts.
According to sources, the anticipated appointments never materialized, leaving the legislators struggling to meet their loan repayment obligations.
“These MPs are under immense pressure because the appointments they were banking on did not come through. They are now worried about how they will repay the loans they secured,” a source close to the legislators, who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly on the matter, told this publication.
The source further alleged that the MPs had expected support from former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among regarding the appointments, but changing political dynamics have complicated the situation.
The financial challenges are reportedly causing anxiety among the affected legislators, with concerns that the burden of servicing the loans could divert attention from their parliamentary duties and constituency development.
There has been no official confirmation from the MPs allegedly involved, nor have they publicly responded to the claims. Similarly, no official statement has been issued by former Speaker Anita Among regarding the allegations.
The claims remain unverified, and efforts to obtain comments from the affected parties were ongoing by the time of publication.
