France Cruise Into Round of 16 Behind Brilliant Mbappé

FT: France 3-0 Sweden

Kylian Mbappé continued his remarkable FIFA World Cup goalscoring record with a superb brace as France defeated Sweden 3-0 on Tuesday to book their place in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The France captain once again proved the difference on football’s biggest stage, scoring either side of halftime, while Bradley Barcola added a second-half goal as Didier Deschamps’ side produced another commanding display to maintain their perfect tournament record.

France arrived in New Jersey full of confidence after winning all three of their group matches, and they immediately took control of proceedings against a Swedish side that struggled to cope with the pace, movement and creativity of Les Bleus’ attack.

The 2018 world champions created wave after wave of attacks during a dominant first half, registering 15 attempts before the interval. Mbappé thought he had opened the scoring midway through the half, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside following a VAR review. Moments later, the Real Madrid forward struck the woodwork, while Michael Olise came within inches of producing one of the goals of the tournament when his spectacular overhead kick crashed against the crossbar.

Sweden absorbed the pressure for much of the opening period but finally conceded on the stroke of halftime. Receiving the ball from a cleverly worked short corner, Mbappé glided into the penalty area before unleashing a powerful right-footed strike into the far corner, giving goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom no chance.

France resumed the second half with the same intensity and doubled their advantage eight minutes after the restart. Olise, who was outstanding throughout the contest, threaded an excellent pass into the path of Bradley Barcola, who calmly finished from close range to leave Sweden with a mountain to climb.

The French continued to dominate possession and chances, forcing Zetterstrom into several important saves to deny Jules Koundé and Olise as Sweden struggled to gain any meaningful foothold in the match.

Mbappé sealed the victory in the 74th minute after another incisive move. Olise collected possession on the right before delivering a perfectly weighted pass into the path of the France captain, who confidently swept the ball into the net for his second goal of the evening.

The brace further cemented Mbappé’s place among the greatest players in World Cup history. His tally now stands at 18 goals in just 18 World Cup appearances, moving him into outright second place on the tournament’s all-time scoring list. He also drew level with Lionel Messi on six goals in the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot.

Beyond Mbappé’s brilliance, France impressed collectively with their attacking fluency, disciplined defending and control of possession. Sweden rarely threatened the French goal and were unable to find an answer to the relentless pressure applied by Deschamps’ side throughout the contest.

The comprehensive victory extends France’s unbeaten run at the tournament and reinforces their status as one of the favourites to lift the World Cup trophy once again. With Mbappé in sensational form and a well-balanced squad performing confidently, Les Bleus appear well equipped for the challenges that lie ahead in the knockout rounds.

France will now travel to Philadelphia, where they will face Paraguay in the Round of 16 on 4 July. Sweden, meanwhile, bow out of the tournament after seeing their campaign ended by one of the competition’s strongest teams.
