KAMPALA – Veteran journalist Steven Ariong has stirred debate after suggesting that Uganda Prisons Service should play Teso gospel and cultural music for detainees from the Teso sub-region if more leaders are remanded to Luzira Prison as part of the ongoing corruption investigations linked to former Speaker of Parliament Anita Among.
In a satirical commentary shared publicly, Ariong said the music would help “comfort” suspects from Teso who could be imprisoned over the alleged corruption scandal.
His remarks come amid ongoing investigations by the Inspector General of Government (IGG) into alleged abuse of public resources and corruption involving former Speaker Anita Among and several current and former parliamentary officials.
Ariong claimed that up to 80 political leaders, including Members of Parliament from the Teso sub-region, could face arrest as the investigations continue. However, this figure has not been officially confirmed by the IGG or any other government agency.
He also noted that Parliament’s Director of Communications, Chris Obore, and several others are already in prison over the ongoing investigations.
The veteran journalist recalled Obore’s widely shared celebratory dance following Anita Among’s election as Speaker after the death of former Speaker Jacob Oulanyah. He also referenced the popular phrase “Ijaiso Oboro” (“We are in things”), which gained attention on social media during that period.
The IGG has continued to investigate allegations of corruption involving parliamentary officials, with several suspects already facing charges in court as the probe expands.
