Uganda Airlines has taken a major step toward expanding its global footprint after placing an order for eight new Boeing aircraft, a move that will significantly boost the national carrier’s regional and international operations.
The announcement was made on July 21, 2026, during the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom. The deal includes four Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft and four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners, marking Uganda Airlines’ first direct purchase from Boeing.
The new aircraft are expected to increase both passenger and cargo capacity as the airline works to transform Entebbe International Airport into a major aviation hub serving Africa and beyond.
Speaking at the event, Uganda Airlines Chief Executive Officer Ato Girma Wake described the agreement as a major milestone for the airline’s long-term growth plans.
He said the new fleet will enable Uganda Airlines to strengthen connections within Africa while expanding services to Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and other international destinations. According to Wake, the investment will also support tourism, trade, investment, and cargo transportation, helping Uganda strengthen its position in the global aviation market.
The Boeing 737-8 MAX aircraft will mainly operate regional routes across Africa, as well as selected destinations in the Middle East and India. Each aircraft can carry between 160 and 180 passengers and has a range of up to 6,480 kilometres.
Meanwhile, the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliners will handle long-haul flights to Europe, Asia, and the Middle East. With a maximum range of about 15,370 kilometres, the aircraft will allow the airline to launch or expand nonstop international services.
Boeing says both aircraft models are between 20 and 25 percent more fuel-efficient than older-generation aircraft, helping Uganda Airlines reduce operating costs while improving environmental sustainability.
Boeing Senior Vice President for Commercial Sales and Marketing, Brad McMullen, welcomed Uganda Airlines as a new customer, saying the aircraft will provide the efficiency, flexibility, and range needed to support the airline’s continued expansion.
The partnership extends beyond aircraft deliveries. It also includes technical support, pilot and engineering training, and other capacity-building programs designed to strengthen Uganda Airlines’ operational capabilities for years to come.
Since its revival in 2019, Uganda Airlines has steadily expanded its network and currently serves 17 destinations across 13 countries from its hub at Entebbe International Airport.
The Ugandan government views aviation as a key driver of economic growth, with stronger air connectivity expected to boost tourism, increase trade opportunities, attract foreign investment, and improve the country’s export potential.
The latest aircraft order represents one of the biggest investments in the airline’s modernisation strategy and signals Uganda Airlines’ ambition to become a stronger competitor in regional and international aviation.
