Equity Bank Uganda has launched a mission to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to provide specialized financial services to Ugandans living and working there. The bank’s visit aims to strengthen relationships with the Ugandan community in the UAE and offer tailored solutions to meet their specific needs.
Remittances from Ugandans in the UAE to Uganda have been significant. In 2023, these remittances amounted to approximately USD 300 million, representing 21% of the total remittances sent to Uganda from abroad. This underscores the importance of the Ugandan diaspora in the UAE to the country’s economy.
Equity Bank Uganda’s visit to the UAE includes several key activities:
- Meeting with Ugandans: The bank will directly interact with Ugandans living and working in the UAE to understand their financial needs and offer appropriate solutions.
- Providing specialized services: Equity Bank will offer a range of financial services, including diaspora accounts, investment advice, and loan assistance.
- Strengthening relationships: The visit aims to build stronger relationships with the Ugandan community in the UAE.
The visit is part of Equity Bank Uganda’s International Customer Service Month 2024, themed “Above & Beyond.” Winfred Wanjiru, Head of International Banking, emphasized the bank’s commitment to supporting the Ugandan diaspora through seamless banking, financial, and investment solutions.
The UAE has become a popular destination for Ugandans seeking employment opportunities. In 2023, it was estimated that over 200,000 Ugandans were living and working in the UAE. Remittances from these individuals play a crucial role in reducing poverty and enhancing food security in Uganda.
Equity Bank Uganda’s visit to the UAE aligns with its vision of being a champion of socio-economic prosperity for Africans. By providing tailored financial services to Ugandans in the UAE, the bank aims to contribute to their well-being and the development of their home country.
During the visit, Equity Bank Uganda’s International Banking and Cross-Border Payments team will participate in various events, including the Uganda Independence celebrations, the launch of the Uganda Business Centre, and the Uganda-UAE Business Convention. They will also visit employee camps of major companies that employ Ugandans.
The visit will also raise awareness of Equity Bank’s presence in the UAE and encourage engagement with the Ugandan diaspora community. The bank aims to address the challenges that many Ugandans in the UAE face in accessing reliable banking services.
Equity Bank Managing Director, Anthony Kituuka, highlighted the significance of the visit. He emphasized the bank’s ongoing commitment to working closely with its clients and providing easily accessible financial services. The UAE’s importance as a destination for Ugandan migrant workers and businessmen was also emphasized, along with the bank’s efforts to expand its footprint in the Middle East.
In addition to offering financial services, Equity Bank will also provide financial literacy education and sensitization on secure banking. This is crucial to protect Ugandans in the UAE from financial fraud.
