Twegaite International, once a beacon of hope for the Busoga community both in the Diaspora and Uganda, has tragically deteriorated into a shadow of its former self. Once a thriving organization with impactful programs in Uganda and a strong presence in the United States, Twegaite has been crippled by poor leadership, financial mismanagement, and a decade of stagnation.

The Rise and Fall of Twegaite International
Twegaite was founded on the principles of inclusiveness and apolitical engagement. It was built to serve as a platform that not only united Basoga in the Diaspora but also contributed meaningfully to the development of communities back home. Through its revival in 2007 in Houston, Texas, the organization implemented a unique model—hosting a convention one year and dedicating the next year to hands-on work in various Twegaite communities.

This model led to significant achievements, including establishing projects that improved healthcare and education in Busoga. Among the notable projects were:

A cancer treatment center at Jinja Hospital (Grade B).

Renovation of Mayuge Health Center and Bugembe Health Clinic.

Support for Kidhera Primary School and Alininkira Women Projects.

Microfinance initiatives that empowered rural women farmers.

Establishing international collaborations for Busoga’s development.

These successes positioned Twegaite as a fully certified nonprofit organization in both Uganda and the United States. Unfortunately, all these gains were undone after a hostile takeover by a group of self-serving individuals who prioritized personal gain over the organization’s mission.

The Beginning of the Decline
The downfall of Twegaite International began after its hostile hijack by a group led by Mr. Tony Isubikalu, Mr. Victor Lukandwa, Ms. Juliet Aliyinza, and a one Situka from Texas. These individuals, driven by a desire for power and financial gain, overturned the organization’s constitution and refused to hold elections for over a decade. Their actions led to:

Misappropriation of funds meant for projects, including donations to the Jinja Cancer Treatment Center.

Diversion of community funds to personal ventures, including using Twegaite resources to support Mr. Situka’s hospice business.

Abandonment of all community programs and the collapse of international partnerships.

Loss of Twegaite’s nonprofit status in the USA and its NGO status in Uganda.

The situation deteriorated further after 2019 when the organization was handed over to Mr. Peter Mukunya, an individual lacking the expertise and knowledge to lead a charitable organization. During his tenure, Twegaite became completely dormant, and the once-vibrant organization slipped into oblivion.

The Collapse of Leadership and Continued Decay
At the 2023 Dallas Convention, the entrenched leadership deliberately avoided holding elections, citing unfounded reasons involving high-profile Ugandan political figures. Instead of restoring democratic processes, Mr. Victor Lukandwa, who had served as treasurer for over a decade without ever presenting a financial report, was appointed president by his long-time allies.

Under his leadership, Twegaite lost all its programs, international affiliations, and credibility. The organization became a symbol of decay, with no tangible achievements to justify its continued existence. The subsequent conventions in New York, Washington, New Jersey, and Dallas only reinforced this decline, leaving many Basoga disillusioned and frustrated.

Why I Am Attending the Twegaite Global Convention in Los Angeles
As one of the architects of Twegaite International, I refuse to stand by and watch the complete erosion of an organization that once held so much promise. I will be attending the Twegaite Global Convention in Los Angeles from May 22–26, 2025, because this event marks a turning point—a chance to rebuild and restore Twegaite’s lost glory.

Here’s why this convention is important:

Restoring Lost Programs and Affiliations:
The focus in Los Angeles will be on reviving the successful programs that were abandoned, including healthcare, education, and microfinance initiatives. We aim to re-establish partnerships and restore Twegaite’s reputation as a catalyst for positive change in Busoga.

Correcting the Wrong and Choosing Truth:
Supporting the convention in Minnesota, which celebrates 25 years of Twegaite without acknowledging the decay of the last decade, would be equivalent to endorsing failure and corruption. We cannot celebrate disunity, mismanagement, and stagnation.

Reviving the True Vision of Twegaite:
Twegaite Global is committed to re-establishing an inclusive, democratic, and impactful organization. This is a platform where genuine solutions to Busoga’s problems will be discussed, and actionable plans will be implemented.

Holding Rogue Leaders Accountable:
Our efforts aim to put pressure on the current leadership to reconsider their actions and pave the way for the return of democratic processes. The Los Angeles convention is an opportunity to demonstrate that change is possible and necessary.

The Future of Twegaite: A New Dawn
The future of Twegaite International looks bleak under the current leadership, which has refused to relinquish power despite years of failure. This is why a group of former founders, including myself, have taken the bold step of creating Twegaite Global—a platform dedicated to reviving the organization’s original mission. Our goals include:

Restoring the true representation of Twegaite’s vision and purpose.

Forcing the current leadership to reconsider their stance and open the door for new leadership.

Eventually, reuniting as one cohesive organization that reflects the aspirations of the Basoga community.

Why You Should Join Us in Los Angeles?

I appeal to my family, friends, network, and all well-wishers to join me at the Twegaite Global Convention in Los Angeles from May 22–26, 2025. This is an opportunity to rebuild an organization that once brought pride and progress to Busoga. Do not be swayed by misinformation and propaganda aimed at discrediting this effort. Together, we can revive Twegaite and ensure that it once again becomes a powerful force for change.

Let us unite, rebuild, and reclaim the true vision of Twegaite. See you in Los Angeles during Memorial Weekend 2025!

Sincerely,
D.W. Dhikusoka
